ROVERS WIN GAME 1!

The Rovers faced off against West Islip for Game 1 of 3 in the Long Island Cup Tournament. The game was at West Islip High School.

The girls showed up at the field cold and tired from the party the night before, but in a good frame of mind. Most girls hadn't played soccer from the end of the Fall, so there would be some rust to shake off.

The team was excited and enthusiastic during warmups and were enjoying seeing each other back on the field. The decision to go with eyeblack crosses was made, which gave the girls a bit of a crazy look, but all in good fun.

The league had finally lifted the Pandemic rules, so Captains were back to taking the coin toss and choosing sides and the ball. Wind would be a huge factor in the game this day as it made the field lopsided. The team would want the wind at their backs to start the game to hopefully get an advantage of a goal or two before the half and in case the wind might change.

But the Rovers would lose the coin toss and start against the wind.

The game would start and it was evident that there would be a period of the girls "getting their legs under them" to get back to playing Rovers Soccer. Add to that playing into the wind and it was a tough first half ahead.

The team's timing and play making was a step behind for the first 10 minutes and the windy conditions wasn't heping them. But that would soon wear off and the team would come together. It wouldn't be long before the Rovers would start to push and take control of the field. With only a few scoring chances, the Rovers would finally get the first goal of the game on a quick cut and shoot by Violet. The girls were now excited and fully focused on the game.

The 1st half would end, the wind did not change and the Rovers were set up nicely for a good second half.

At the half the girls would discuss what they were going to do and any changes they would need to make for the 2nd. As I, their coach, went to get them together for a quick Rovers chant, I was quickly attacked with the girls yelling NOOOOO! That's bad luck!. I quickly retreated and went back to my corner.

The second half would start, and now with the wind at their backs, the Rovers would completely take over and dominate. The team started pressing and applying un-relenting pressure to West Islip and finally West Islip caved. With the ball outside the 18 and far off to the right, Cienna would take a shot that went like a dart and snuck into the net just inside the post. A perfectly placed shot, the goalie had no chance and it was 2-0.

The pressure would not end there and finally, it was clear West Islip clearly had given up. The game would end and go into the record books as another L.I. Cup playoff win for the Rovers. The Rovers L.I. Cup Playoff record would now be 9 - 2!

With a favorable schedule this tournament, the Rovers have earned a bye-week which means they only need one more win to make their third cup final appearance!

It is shaping up to be another exciting cup season and we can't wait to see how it all plays out!

Until next time!

The Standings Are Final!

The season is officially over and the last game has been played.
Yesterday, HBC defeated Port Washington denying the Rovers their first ever 2nd place finish.
But they do finish in 3rd and qualify to move up to the Championship Division in the Spring.

It has been an exciting season for the Rovers though. Many tight games that the Rovers won showed their mental and physical toughness.
It also provided the team with possibly the greatest game in their history!

Over the years there has been talk of the supposed list called the "TOP FIVE." A coach's list of the top 5 games the Rovers have ever played.

Finally, the list has been revealed!

First, some games that didn't make the list:
• First Place Win at Globall
• 2nd Place Finish at East Meadow
• Regular Season Win Against Auburndale (1st game under SUSA trainer)
• The first win ever at Hofstra

"THE TOP FIVE"
#5 — The "HALEY'S COMET" 12 player shootout playoff loss against Albertson at Hofstra.
#4 — The "MOTHER'S DAY MONSOON" overtime shootout win in a torrential downpour/hurricane/nor-easter/monsoon that eventually led the team to their 2nd L.I. Cup appearance.
#3 — The "ANGRY GOALIE" overtime shootout win against Lynbrook to get to their first L.I. Cup appearance.
#2 — The "LEHIGH CHAMPIONSHIP" Win.
#1 — Finally, the "DARK SUS ALLEY" win against Roosevelt.

The game against 2nd place Roosevelt, which was a must win for the team, was as exciting as it gets, as the game would come down to the very last second of play. The girls who were losing 3-1 came back to win 4-3 which was their biggest comeback ever! What's most impressive is that the team started the game with only 13 players and would finish with just 12 after an injury.

Those 13 girls played their hearts out and showed what it takes to be a good team, what it takes to play for and trust each other and their coaches, and what it means to be true champions. Easily, the greatest game this team has ever played.

What's Next?
Now, the Rovers look ahead to Winter League (hopefully) to see if they can make some more memories.

Rovers Nation would like to wish everyone and their families a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving!

ROVERS MOVING TO CHAMPIONSHIP!

The Rovers have completed their remarkable season beating Patchogue yesterday morning 3-1.

The win secures a top 3 finish for the girls ensuring they will be moving up to the head of the class and competing in the Championship Division in the Spring.

It was an early game yesterday out in Patchogue. The game started at 9am and the field an hour away, so most were sleeping in the car on the way. But a vigorous warmup session would wake them up.

The girls were definitely pumped for this game knowing what was on the line.
(After being eliminated from being able to finish first, the focus became on trying for second, but more importantly, finishing in the top 3 of the division so they would move up into the Championship Division for the first time in the team's history. And yesterday they checked that box.)

The coach gathered the team before the start and gave a short talk:
"Out on the field is second place and the Championship Division. You are not entitled to it. It will not be given to you. You must go out there and take it." - Coach Frank

The game would start with the Rovers having the ball first. Off the first play, the girls would use their long-ball play. Kayla would play back to Lauren and Lauren would launch the ball down the field. The play would work to perfection as a centering pass was made and Cienna would put the ball in the net! 10 seconds in and the Rovers were up by 1 and the crowd went wild!

The first half would continue, mostly with the Rovers dominating play. And as the half was coming to a close, a late push by Patchogue would get them a tying goal. 1-1 at the end of the first half.

On the bench at halftime the girls were in a good frame of mind knowing that they were the better team. They didn't seem worried about the score, especially after last week's comeback of 4 unanswered goals to win.

The second half would start and the Rovers were pushing hard. They were dominating in all facets of the game getting multiple shots and scoring chances.
Then Violet, while attempting to make a run with the ball, would get fouled in the box and would be awarded a penalty shot! Since she was fouled she was given the chance to shoot, and she never misses. Cool, calm and collected, Violet put the ball into the lower corner and the Rovers were up again 2-1.

Now the coaches were just rolling lines, encouraging the players to control the play and take up time. But the girls had other things on their mind. Playing very aggressive, they would start yet another unstoppable push. Keira would get her 2nd assist of the day on a great pass to Sophia who would put the ball just under the crossbar above the goalie's head. It was an awesome shot from the top of the 18 and would be Sophia's second in as many games. This was also Keira's second assist in this game and her third in her last 2.

The girls were on auto pilot now and would give Patchogue nothing.
The defense was stellar all day. Led by Mia at Centerback and Sam on the right, they had made so many plays. Between them and their Goalie Haley, the entire defensive group was definitely a major part of this win.

So Where Do They Finish?
Currently the Rovers are in 2nd place with 19 pts. HBC who is in 5th with 17 pts beat Lynbrook yesterday. (Thanks Lynbrook!) HBC has a makeup game next week against Port Washington (team that beat the Rovers).
If HBC wins, which they are expected to, they would jump all the way up to second place with 20 pts, moving the Rovers down to third place with 19 pts.

So the worst case scenario would be HBC winning, moving up to 2nd and the Rovers to third. But the Rovers still earned a berth into the Championship Division which has been their goal from the start, capping off one of their best seasons ever.

One more week and we'll know how it ends!
Stay Tuned!

All or Nothing!

Well here we go! The season for the Rovers will come down to the final game!
Plain and simple, the Rovers need to win. A win will give the team a second place finish, no team behind them could catch them.
A tie or loss will drop them all the way down to 5th place.

Finishing in 2nd would move the team up to the Championship Division in the Spring, which would be a first for them.

The girls will play Patchogue, the team that is currently in 2nd place above the Rovers by 2 points.
Patchogue leads the league in goals scored, but also has a high goals against number which means their defense may not be very strong.
The Rovers on the other hand have one of the lowest goals allowed number so this should be a battle between offense and defense.

The Rovers will need to rely on every player they can to get the W.

Catching Up With The Coach:
The coach has said he will be taking an aggressive stance for this game. Reports coming in are that he will be changing the starters and moving a few girls into different positions in hopes of sparking some offense, and shoring up the midfield. They will also be playing an extremely aggressive formation.

When asked why the sudden change at the end of the season and if this may be a bad idea, his reply was simply,
"We have nothing to lose and I trust my girls completely."

Injury Update:
The Rovers hope to get their Captain and starting Centerback Abby M. back after clearing concussion protocol. She remains a game time decision.
Bridget M. who had injured her ankle is reported to be day to day and will also be a game time decision.
Charlotte S. who also injured her foot last game is reported to be doing fine and is expected to play.
Mia, Kayla and Lauren who have been playing injured showed no signs of their injuries affecting their play in the last game and are expected to be at 100%.

How will this season finally play out? Only time will tell.
The one thing that can be said is that it has been one of the most entertaining seasons since the team's 2 cup runs!

Stay tuned to see how it all ends!

Character! Strength! Heart!

Character, Strength and Heart. These three words describe the 13 players who fought so hard yesterday to keep the Rover's quest for 2nd place alive.

Adversity is in their DNA!
Against so many obstacles, (playing away, a tiny terrible field, only 13 players, a second place opponent, field location being moved at the last minute, no sideline referees, starting 30 minutes late and finishing in the dark, then being down 3-1 to start the 2nd half,) the Rovers, found a way to dig deep and pullout a historical win to add to the Rover's lore. This team laughs in the face of adversity!

The girls were outplayed for the first 35 minutes of half 1 being down 2-0. Roosevelt's big defender was shutting down any offensive attack. Our strikers switched sides and then it turned. Keira out muscled their top defender and made a perfect cross pass to Kayla who turned and fired a heat-seeker past the goalie for the first goal. This gave the team some life.

The second half would start and Roosevelt would get their third goal, but the girls were starting to play well and began taking over.
Pushing the play down the field and getting a ton of pressure, the Rovers would find the crack in the armor of the Roosevelt defense and Michaela, playing center mid, would hammer a ball into the net for the Rover's second.

3-2 and the Momentum was Changing.
The girls were applying pressure all over the field, moving the ball well and keeping it low in the corners. then during a scrum for posession, the pass was made to Lauren at the top of the 18.
"If Gretzky had his office behind the net, then Lauren definitely has her office at the top of the 18."
As she has done so many times from the same spot, Lauren punched through a blast to tie the game at 3!

3-3 and the Tide had Turned!
Now the girls were really pushing. After a couple of good chances from corner kicks, the defense was playing high up the field and the Rovers had 9 in the box pressuring Roosevelt hard.
Then a penalty! In the box! A penalty shot for the Rovers!

HEART ATTACK time!
It took longer than usual for the coach to choose the shooter since their primary shooter, Bridget M. was injured during the game. But the choice was made. Grace who was playing a strong game would put the weight of the season on her shoulders and take the shot.

A- Nerves?
B- Fear?
C- Pressure?
What was she feeling?
D- NONE OF THE ABOVE
(I heard Grace had a big bowl of Pressure mixed with Fear and sprinkled with Nerves for breakfast!)
And as she laughed in the face of fear, she blasted a tomahawk missile into the net to take the lead 4-3 and the girls went nuts jumping on her and hugging each other.

Now came the tension.
There was still a lot of time in the game and the countdown would begin.
The Rovers were tired and had only one sub so the coach would get them to slow the pace.

The girls slowed down every play taking their time on throw ins, goalie kicks and generally any stoppage that took place.

They played the ball out of bounds or sent it far down the field to try to hold off the push that Roosevelt was about to make. Lauren would even receive a yellow card for taking too long on a free kick.

Roosevelt would finally gather steam and get a lot of pressure, playing the last 5 or 6 minutes in front of the Rover's goal. The referee even gave them extra time because they were pressing and close to scoring.

But, the Rovers would bend and not break.
They would eventually shut down Roosevelt and win the game defying impossible odds and thus, keep their hopes alive for a second place finish and a trip to the Championship Division in the Spring.

Just naming the girls who scored does not paint the complete picture of this game. There wasn't one of the 13 players who didn't leave it all out on the field yesterday. The effort and fight they put up was reminiscent of the Lehigh Championship.
The team would come back from being down 3-1 to score unanswered goals and win.
The biggest comeback in this team's history.

This will easily enter the Rover's record books as one of the top 5 games in their long list of greats.

And of course this will set up yet another monumental game next week as the girls need to win again to complete thier task.

Ugh That's ENOUGH for now!

2 Games Left to Get to 2nd!

With the Fall Season winding down, the Rovers, with two games left, will need to win both games if they have any chance of finishing in the top 3 and being able to move up to the Championship Division in the Spring.

This will be a tough task as both games are away and the injury bug has taken its toll on the team. Team Captain and Centerback Abby M., and right defenseman Sam M. will both not be available. There are a few players who are still playing hurt, but improving. The final roster for this Sunday has not been set yet.

With all the injuries plaguing the team, the Rovers have been mixing and matching different formations, and with the possibility of missing two defenders this Sunday, that trend will continue. But the Rovers are a resilient group and the cream always rises to the top which is what the coaches are expecting Sunday. It should be a great game and a great effort put forth by the girls.

This Week's Question

Why are the girls always being called for offsides? Isn't there anyway to keep them from doing this? Doesn't this hurt the team?

Offsides can be frustrating, especially if you do not understand all the positive aspects it provides.

Offsides is part of every team sport. When teams or players are called for offsides, it is because they are trying to push the envelope, to get that last inch of advantage over their opponent. While a lot of times offsides gets called, the few times it doesn't usually results in goals or great scoring opportunities.

If a team gets 10 chances and 7 are called for offsides, but 3 result in breakaway goals, a 3-0 score is a win, so the result is worth the penalties.

But being offsides has other important, strategic benefits as well.
Here are two main advantages:
#1 - Offsides calls usually occur in the other teams 18 yd box or in front of their goal. That means they then have a free kick. But they now need to not only move the ball the entire length of the field, but we have them pinned on their half which is where we want to play. - Strategic Advantage

#2 - By having our Strikers continually force the play downfield and getting offsides calls, it begins to push the opposing team's defenders back for fear of giving up a breakaway. The result is a larger gap between their midfielders and defenders giving our offense more space to take and control. - Strategic Advantage

Hopefully that helps everyone understand the advatages of the offsides call.

That's all for now!

Rovers Looking For 2nd Place!

The Rovers celebrated Halloween yesterday with a victory against Valley Stream. The girls started the game matching Valley Stream's numbers on the field playing 8v8. But Valley Stream, a first year team, was outmatched in every way, and the Rovers would only play with 6 players to make it more competitive for everyone.

The players would switch all positions making it fun for them. A couple of highlights were a goal by Haley, her first in 3 years! She was taken out of goal, asked to play striker, went on the field and with her first play got the ball, made about three touches and scored.

Kayla also played goal and made some nice saves.

Sophia was put on defense. On one play where the opposing player got past the Rovers defense and looked to have a clear shot at scoring, Sophia, out of no where, swooped in and took her out making a great defensive play.

But, the highlight had to be Gabby in goal. Gabby did not use her hands and was all over making plays before the opposing team even got near the net! She was the most aggressive goalie to ever play in the history of the Rovers and was fun to watch.

Goals were scored by:
Lauren (2)
Grace (1)
Kayla (1)
Haley (1)

Looking toward the last two games of the season, The Rovers will have a tough challenge ahead. Both games are away and both games are against teams that sit right above them in the standings. This will be a great challenge for the team. If they can take both games, they could finish in 2nd which would be a huge accomplishment considering all the adversity the team has faced this season.

A great question has been asked and will be answered in our next pre-game newsletter!

That's all for now!

🎃 Last Home Game 🎃 TRICK? or TREAT? 🎃

The Rovers will play their last home game of the season when they face Valley Stream this Sunday at 1:20 at ATS. Although Valley Stream is still looking for their first win, they have always been a formidable club.

TREAT 🤩
The good news is that the Rovers will be getting Haley their goalie back and will also be getting their all-star defenseman Mia back. Those girls are raring to play and the Rovers should have a good sized roster for the game.

After a tough weekend in Lynbrook, the Rovers need to put in a good effort to bounce back and right the ship. With three games remaining in the season, the girls are looking to finish strong ahead of the upcoming Winter Season.

TRICK 😈
The Fall Season has never been kind to the Rovers. But this Fall has been different. The team started off strong and have found themselves in the rare position of being able to finish in the top of the division! They are fully capable of finishing off the season winning out their last three and that would be a thrilling end for them!

🏳️ WHITE OUT! 🏳️
This will be the last home game of the season and hopefully we can get a huge turnout for the game. More Rally Towels have come in and Rovers Nation is looking for a "White Out" with all fans supporting the team.

That's all for now!

A Great Effort By A Frustrated Team

Despite a strong game played by the Rovers, the girls could not overcome the obstacles in their way.

The Rovers would play their most important game of the season against the strongest team in the division. The girls desperately needed a win to stay in the hunt for 1st place. But with only two subs and no goalie, there was only so much they could do. The Rovers would suffer their worst loss of the season dropping the game to Lynbrook 4-0 who had a full bench of players.

The morning started off with the pre-game meet. The girls were already visibly frustrated and a few a little angry when they found out the conditions they would be playing under. But the coaches worked hard at lightening up the mood and tried to get them to relax.

The first problem that would need to be addressed was who would play goal. Credit Erin and Bridget P. for volunteering. They both played really well in goal, and could not be held responsible for the goals they let in. We may see Bridget P. in goal again this season!

As the game started, the Rovers were strong. Moving the ball well they looked good. But it would not take long for Lynbrook to strike. As the half went on the Rovers were holding their own, playing most of the game on the defensive, but they were running out of steam and Lynbrook would get their second of the game towards the end of the half.

The second half would start and Lynbrook would again strike early on a nice crossing play. And as quick as they scored their third they would score their fourth on an unstoppable corner kick. The Rovers worked hard and did get a few pushes going. They created a handful of really nice plays getting a few scoring opportunities. Michaela, who was injured twice and would come back both times after using a few icepacks and costing the team thousands, would play every position on the field trying to help her team.
But with about 20 minutes to go in the second, the girls had nothing left in the tank and couldn't keep up. Lynbrook was dominating. To the Rovers credit, they gave everything they had to hold off the attack and get out without giving up another goal.

As for the rest of the teams in Division 1, they were not kind to the Rovers. With the teams ahead of them all winning, the Rovers now drop down to 6th and are mathematically eliminated from being able to finish 1st.

But on a positive note, they could still make a top three finish if they could win out the season and get some help from other teams losing. They do have a favorable schedule for their last 3 games so it could be interesting!

All in all, everyone played a solid game. They were not at all outplayed or outworked, they were just outnumbered and both coaches were extremely proud of them.

The Rovers next game will be on Halloween against Valley Stream at ATS.

That's all for now!

HERE WE GO!

With four games remaining in the Fall season, it looks like it will be a crazy race to the finish line.
The Rovers currently sit in 4th place with two games against teams above them and two games against teams below them.

What's at Stake?
The Rovers are in a position where they could win the division which would be a first for the team. But that's not all that can happen. If the Rovers fail to win first, they are still in a prime position to finish in the top 3.
Finishing in the top 3 would move the team up into the Championship Division!

What Needs To Happen?
• If the Rovers run the table and win their last 4 games, they would win the division and move up.
• If the Rovers win Sunday against Lynbrook (1st) and then win against Valley Stream (10) and Roosevelt (5) But lose against Patchogue (2) They could finish in the top 3 depending on what HBC does.
• If the Rovers split in any way, then they would finish 4th or lower.

The Rovers control their fate here. They hold all the keys necessary to unlock their first ever championship season and/or become a Championship Division team.

But whatever the outcome, this is one of the best seasons for the team, accomplishing all of this with no practices, relying on the skills they already have and the knowledge of their game and system.

It's should be an exciting finish so be prepared!

Well, that's all for now!

Rovers, Rally Towels, Injuries & a WIN!

On the Rovers Rally Towel Day, the girls, a beat up group, found a way to get the W.
The team has been hit hard with the injury bug. Today, the Rovers were missing Bridget P. (finger), and Kayla (back). Both Lauren (foot) and Bridget M. (foot), were playing hurt.
The team will take another hit this week as Sam (ankle) is expected to be ready for next week, but Mia (shoulder) is most likely out.
The girls will have to continue to dig deep to continue moving up in the standings.

Today's game was a total team effort with contributions from all over the field. Girls were being double and triple shifted and the team played three different formations! It not only showed how deep of a team this is, it also showed their level of intelligence to execute these changes in real time without having any practice.

Looking ahead to their next game, the Rovers will be facing Lynbrook. Whenever these two teams meet, it is always a tight, physical game and this one should be no different. If the Rovers want to keep their 1st place hopes alive, this is a must win for them.

In a New Feature for the Rovers Nation Newsletter, each week we will be taking questions from members and answering them.
So if you do have a question, just email the team and we will answer it in our next newsletter. Questions will all be anonymus.

This week's question:
Why do the girls always play the ball back?

Answer: Playing the ball back is a two fold strategy.
First, it creates time and space for the girls to reset their position. By playing it back, girls can now spread out again, move to an empty space on the field and reset the play all while keeping posession of the ball.
Second, it pulls the defending team out of position and gets them moving. By pulling the other team back, it creates open space and lanes for attack. it also keeps the other team moving which gives them less time to set up and prepare to defend.
The Rovers execute this strategy as good as any team and in most cases better. They are successful at it and get many scoring opportunities from it.

Have a question? Let us know! Just reply to this email!

Well, that's all for now!

No Lehigh Trip, But a Fun Day Anyway!

For the first time the Rovers did not make the Lehigh trip due to aging out of the tournament. It's a solemn reminder of the girls getting older and becoming young adults missing out on some of the fun activities they grew up on as children.

But in typical Rovers fashion, the team decided to have a rare practice, and of course, the rain would not stop their fun.

A light hearted practice working on skills and then a fun scrimmage had the girls engaged and enjoying each other.

When asked why they had so much energy for practice and what the intense discussion before, during, and after practice was about, their reply was, "anytime we get together it's like a reunion and we all have to catch up!"

It was a great turnout with 15 players showing up on time and ready to go. Dunkin Munchkins and hot chocolate were shared after practice where the girls conitnued their meeting, in the rain, for almost 30 minutes! All in all, a fun day for all.

The Rovers now look ahead to their game on Sunday at ATS at 12:40 against West Islip, where they will try to bounce back from a devastating loss and right the ship in their pursuit of 1st place and a division championship.

All that signed up for the Rovers Nation will be receiving their Rally Towels!

That's all for now!

Rovers Suffer A Severe Blow! But There is Still Hope!

It was a tough weekend for the Rovers. With high hopes of taking over first place, it seemed that the deck was stacked against our home town heroes.

Playing at a field where the Rovers had not had much success, the sunny, hot conditions, (Rovers are at their best when it's cold and rainy), missing one striker and their starting centerback, the party the night before, a mean coach yelling at our parents on the sidelines, and all the teams ahead of them winning their games. What else could you pile on against them!

But Hope Remains!
The Rovers currently sit in 5th place only 3 points out of the bottleneck for 1st. If the Rovers can string together a bunch of wins, they could be in the running to take the division.

Their main hurdle will be the game on Oct 24 at Lynbrook. This has turned out to be a must win for the girls as Lynbrook sits on top of the pile at 1st place and is undefeated.
A win would give Lynbrook their first defeat and push the Rovers ahead of them.
At the very least, it looks like it will be an exciting end to the Fall season, coming right down to the wire if the Rovers can bounce back and continue winning.

The coach has planned a fun get together/practice on Sunday, 12pm at FPM to loosen up the mood with Dunkin Donuts and Hot Chocolate.

That's all for this now!

Rovers Playing Well

The Rovers have started off the season red hot, going into week 4 undefeated with 2 wins and a tie. They are currently in 3rd place.

The players have adapted quickly to the aggressive "2-formation" game plan of the coach. ( the Rovers play 2 different formations switching every 10 minutes. ) They have been playing well and dominant in their first 3 games.

This week's game will be at Harbor Links ( a field that has not been kind to the Rovers ) against Port Washington.

This will be a good challenge for the team as they will be playing without 3, possibly 4 players.
Kayla ( IR ), team captain Abby ( undisclosed ), and Sophia ( undisclosed ), will not be available. Lauren will be a game time decision and may see limited time due to injury. The Rovers will however have Violet back for this game.

The Rovers, for the first time, find themselves in the position of being able to win the Division 1 Championship! There is currently a 3-way tie for first being decided by the goal differential. Lynbrook, HBC and the Rovers are all 2-0-1. The Division Championship may come down to week 6 against Lynbrook, who are currently in first. We will be watching the results from week to week very closely to see how big that game may become!

That's all for this week!
